XRT2.1K

The McIntosh XRT2.1K, a 4-way full-range loudspeaker, uses an 81-driver line array to distribute sound evenly across listening positions, producing a wide presentation and deep sound stage. Separate binding posts for mid/high, low and subwoofer frequencies support tri-amping or tri-wiring, allowing the system to be configured for different amplifier arrangements.

The McIntosh XRT2.1K is a 4-way full-range loudspeaker developed from more than 45 years of McIntosh speaker design. Each speaker stands 7 feet (2.1 metres) tall and uses a line array to provide wide sound dispersion, spacious reproduction and a deep sound stage.

McIntosh line array principles help maintain a consistent sound level across the listening area. Listeners close to the speaker are not subjected to excessive volume, while those further away experience little reduction in level. This produces smooth, wide coverage and stereo imaging from nearly all listening positions.

Each left and right speaker contains 81 drivers, comprising 6 8” woofers, 2 6.5” low-frequency midrange drivers, 28 2” upper-frequency midrange drivers and 45 ¾” tweeters. The woofers and low-frequency midrange drivers are housed in the large bass enclosure and use diaphragms that are both stiff and light, combined with a long-throw design for low-frequency extension. These drivers were designed specifically for the XRT2.1K.

The line array incorporates aluminium-magnesium upper-frequency midrange and tweeter metal drivers, customised for the McIntosh XRT2.1K and fitted with neodymium magnets. Together, the 4-way design covers the full human audio spectrum.

The crossover network is designed to provide an even frequency response across the audible range. It uses low-loss, high-current capacitors and inductors, with each section employing an inductor selected for high linearity at high power levels. This arrangement reduces distortion across the frequency range.

The reinforced bass cabinet combines brushed and black aluminium with a finish of 7 layers of high-gloss piano black paint. Above it, the line array has a glossy black centre section and 2 silver aluminium end caps, reflecting the appearance of McIntosh front panels. Steel spiders suspend the array from the front of the bass cabinet, with magnetically attached covers styled like McIntosh control knobs.

Removable speaker grilles attach magnetically and use black knitted cloth with high-gloss trim. The cabinet pedestal is constructed from machined aluminium and glass, and rests on 4 adjustable feet. These allow the speaker to make consistent contact with the floor, reducing a potential source of distortion or vibration.

Patented, gold-plated McIntosh Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts provide a secure connection for speaker cables and help maintain the signal to the loudspeaker. Separate binding post pairs are provided for the mid/high, low and subwoofer frequencies, allowing tri-amping or tri-wiring.

The McIntosh logo on the front of the base plate can be illuminated green through Power Control technology found in McIntosh amplifiers, preamplifiers, integrated amplifiers and other products.
