XRT1.1K

The McIntosh XRT1.1K is a 4-way, ported full-range loudspeaker with a 1,200 Watt power rating and a line array design. Its smaller enclosure is 14" (35 cm) shorter and 173 lbs (78 kg) lighter than the XRT2.1K, allowing it to fit into a wider range of home environments while still producing room-filling sound.

The line array produces a broad, even sound field with stereo imaging from nearly all listening positions. Listeners closer to the loudspeaker are on axis to only part of the driver array, while those farther away are on axis to more of the drivers. This helps maintain consistent sound levels and quality across the room without requiring very high volume for more distant listeners.

There are 70 individual drivers in total, comprising 4 6.5" woofers, 2 6.5" low frequency midranges, 24 2" upper frequency midranges and 40 ¾" tweeters. The woofers and low frequency midranges were first designed for the XRT2.1K and are housed in the large bass enclosure behind the line array. Their diaphragms are stiff and lightweight, while the long-throw design provides extended bass response. The upper frequency midranges and tweeters, also first developed for the XRT2.1K, are mounted in the line array in front of the bass cabinet.

The crossover network uses low-loss, high-current capacitors and inductors to maintain an even frequency response across the audible range. Each section uses an inductor selected for high linearity at high power levels, helping to prevent distortion at any frequency. Self-resetting, high-current PTC-type fuses provide additional protection for the drivers.

The bass cabinet is finished in 7 layers of high-gloss piano black paint, with brushed and black aluminium details. The line array has a black centre section with silver trim, echoing the design of a classic McIntosh front panel. It is suspended in front of the bass cabinet by steel spiders inspired by modern skyscraper construction, with magnetic covers shaped to resemble McIntosh control knobs.

Black knit-cloth grilles with high-gloss trim attach using magnetic fasteners and can be removed when the drivers are to remain visible. The base plate combines machined aluminium and glass, and 4 adjustable feet allow the speaker to make firm contact with the floor, removing a potential source of distortion or vibration. The McIntosh XRT1.1K combines this cabinet construction with its 70-driver line array in a format that is 14" (35 cm) shorter and 173 lbs (78 kg) lighter than the XRT2.1K.
