Sopra N1

The Focal Sopra N1 is a 2-way high-end bookshelf loudspeaker designed for compact rooms and larger spaces up to 550ft2 (50m2). Its compact cabinet combines a NIC magnetic circuit, TMD surrounds for the midrange woofer and Infinite Horn Loading (IHL) for the Beryllium tweeter.

Very low distortion contributes to clarity and high definition, alongside the spatial presentation associated with bookshelf loudspeakers. The sound has a smooth texture, with a solid character, full and articulated bass, and a coherent balance that extends beyond the treble. Harmonic richness gives the listener a clear understanding of the music.

With high sensitivity and strong power handling, Focal Sopra N1 functions as a compact monitor for the home. It is suitable for small rooms up to 270ft2 (25m2), as well as spaces up to 550ft2 (50m2).

Stabilising the magnetic field

The NIC, or Neutral Inductance Circuit, controls the magnetic field within the drive unit. Magnetic-field stability supports precise audio reproduction, while the technology limits distortion and reduces its effects. This contributes to high definition and dynamic performance.

The obsession with the midrange

TMD, or Tuned Mass Damper, addresses resonances in the suspension connecting the cone to the basket. Rather than increasing suspension mass, the technology optimises the suspension profile to control resonance, reduce distortion and improve the definition of the bass and midrange.

Innovation

The Beryllium tweeter uses a light, rigid dome for transparent and dynamic treble. In a compact enclosure, the rear cavity is limited by the space required for the bass section. The Infinite Horn Loading system provides the tweeter with its required loading while retaining the compact cabinet format. Its rear wave is gradually absorbed to reduce distortion and maximise treble definition.

Mastering the cabinet and choice of materials

Made in France, the Focal Sopra N1 cabinet was designed at the cabinet-making facility in Bourbon-Lancy, Burgundy, using the same manufacturing process as Utopia. Its 69mm sandwich-machined front panel follows the Gamma Structure principle, providing inertia and damping. This density creates a stable mechanical reference for definition.

The cabinet has no parallel side panels, and small Helmholtz resonators in the lower section help prevent vertical standing waves. Glass is used for the loudspeaker base to provide floor coupling through spikes, supporting fast propagation and removing halo effects in the bass.

Focal Sopra N1 is supplied with a dedicated stand designed to transfer interfering enclosure vibrations towards the floor, avoiding colouration. The stand has a steel frame and a 03⁄4″ (19mm) thick glass base with four adjustable stainless steel spikes, providing high transmission speeds and sharp reproduction.

No sacrifice of performance to aesthetics

The design agency Pineau & Le Porcher developed Sopra around the principle of no sacrifice of performance to aesthetics. Lacquered and bloodwood finishes are combined with other materials, while the front has been kept visually tidy, particularly around the drive units, to support both acoustic and visual integration.

The cabinet structure is arranged around an intermediate section made from injected polyurethane. This allows the upper and lower cabinets to be inclined for Focus Time, the acoustic convergence of the channels.
