Signature Super ARAY AES/EBU 1m

The Chord Cables Signature Super ARAY AES/EBU 1m uses separately shielded high-frequency conductors with a Super ARAY configuration for AES/EBU digital connections over XLR. Its standard 1m length suits digital links between equipment, while longer lengths are available to order and perform without signal loss through the quality of the conductors.

In the late 1990s, a well-regarded DAC and transport appeared with an XLR socket alongside coaxial and Toslink connections. This was, we believe, the first use of the professional AES/EBU digital connection on domestic equipment.

We had the DAC and transport, so we built a 1m cable using 110 Ohm cable and Neutrik XLRs. Compared with a digital coaxial cable, the 75 Ohm S/PDIF connection performed better in every respect. We then found another cable that worked well, despite being nowhere near 110 Ohm impedance. Since then, we have approached the connection with some caution.

As more products have appeared with AES/EBU connections, and because we use separately shielded high-frequency conductors with Tuned/Super ARAY conductor configurations, it made sense to revisit AES/EBU. The Signature Super ARAY AES/EBU cable is a suitable starting point. We also recommend trying the S/PDIF Signature Super ARAY Digital and deciding which connection works better in your system.

The standard length is 1m. Longer lengths are available to order and, due to the quality of the conductors, perform without signal loss.

NB. Some equipment allows RCA to XLR cables to carry a digital signal. This is particularly common with Devialet equipment. With other brands, check with the manufacturer that this connection is supported.
