The conductors are silver-plated, insulated with XLPE and arranged as a twisted pair. For Shawline X, Chord retained the existing conductor layout and added a specially selected PVC internal jacket to reduce mechanical noise. This is followed by the same high-density, dual-layer foil and braid shielding used for Chord Epic. Earlier versions of Shawline and Rumour speaker cables used PTFE insulation, often referred to as Teflon™, which was Chord’s preferred material until Taylon® became available. Although expensive, PTFE offered the best performance.

Material technology continues to develop, and alternatives to PTFE are now available. The cost of Taylon® prevents its use across all of Chord’s ranges, so the company selected a suitable replacement from the XLPE family of insulation materials, known as cross-linked polyethylene. One particular version stood out and, following listening tests, proved sonically better than the PTFE used in Shawline and Rumour speaker cables.

Rumour and Rumour X have remained part of the range because of their performance. They are neutral, with no bias towards a particular sound, and can carry high levels of detail and dynamic information. This allows music to be conveyed in a coherent manner. Shawline X uses this as its starting point and refines it. Its high-frequency-effective shielding reduces interference, helping the cable carry the micro-dynamics and timing nuances that musicians use to define rhythm and expression. Shawline X also conveys the fine details that reveal the timbre of individual instruments. This gives greater insight into the music, while enhancing the image and depth of the system in which it is used.

Shawline X speaker cable is available off the reel or terminated at the UK factory with ChordOhmic 4mm banana plugs or ChordOhmic spade connectors.
