The Esoteric N-05XD network DAC and preamplifier

The Esoteric N-05XD combines a network audio player, DAC, preamplifier and headphone amplifier in a single component for compact high-end systems using a power amplifier, speakers and headphones. It is Esoteric’s first network DAC/preamp, with fully balanced circuitry derived directly from the brand’s flagship series. The network engine has its own linear power supply, while the in-house discrete DAC is designed to reproduce the full content of a recording’s original master.

The design brings together Esoteric’s circuit technology and engineering approach in a simplified system configuration. Its preamplifier and headphone amplifier are intended to preserve the dynamics and energy of recorded music, using carefully selected discrete components rather than ordinary integrated chips.

Master Sound Discrete DAC

The N-05XD’s Master Sound Discrete DAC is a 2-channel stereo DAC circuit based on the original design developed for the Grandioso D1X Monoblock D/A Converter. Each channel uses 16 separate elements, including the clock driver, logic circuitry, capacitors and resistors. These elements are kept fully independent to reduce the loss of musical energy and maintain the purity of the output.

The DAC also uses Esoteric’s Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) modulator, supporting 64-bit/512Fs audio frequency sampling. Separate FPGA digital processing algorithms were developed for each stage of the D/A conversion process, covering both DSD and PCM characteristics and allowing the N-05XD to process compatible digital sources accordingly.

Network audio engine and linear power supply

As a source component, the N-05XD supports DSD 22.5MHz playback through a dedicated network audio engine. Its power supply uses large toroidal transformers, high-capacity filter capacitors, Schottky barrier diodes and high-end super capacitors with a total capacity of 2,333,333μF. The configuration is equivalent in scale to that of Esoteric’s N-01XD and avoids the use of switching elements.

Fully balanced dual mono preamplifier

The preamplifier uses a fully balanced dual mono configuration inherited from the Grandioso line. This circuit combines Esoteric’s long-established design philosophy with its current technology, maintaining separate signal paths for a dynamic and delicate presentation while conveying the characteristics of the performers and sound engineer.

The Esoteric-QVCS attenuator system uses 4 collectively operated attenuator circuits. These independently control the left and right audio channels, together with their positive and negative phases, through electronic volume adjustment. The arrangement maintains channel separation and phase accuracy, while the shorter audio signal path helps limit deterioration at both low and high volume levels.
