The moving coil cartridge converts energy more efficiently than a moving magnet design, but its output voltage is not practical for most amplifier technology to handle directly. By transforming the product of its voltage and current into a form suitable for most amplifiers, the EAR Yoshino MC4 provides an advance over moving magnet cartridges in noise figures of at least 6dB. This allows a dynamic range of 90dB, corresponding to the potential range offered by the record.
EAR designed the transformer to operate close to the ideal of transforming one kind of energy into another without loss. It is intended to allow moving coil cartridges to extract as much information as possible from the groove. Compared with active head amplifiers, the transformer approach avoids the limitations that can restrict information retrieval, including limited bandwidth, time distortion, noise contribution and susceptibility to external influences. The design objective is wide bandwidth, minimal time distortion, minimum noise contribution and maximum protection from external influences.
