The Sugden Masterclass PA-4 is a phono amplifier for vinyl systems, with support for moving-coil and moving-magnet cartridges. It has 2 moving-coil inputs and 1 moving-magnet input, together with virtually unlimited cartridge-loading options. Each unit can be factory configured to match the cartridge precisely.
The moving-coil stage uses a Class A current-feedback circuit. The moving-magnet stage uses a Class A voltage-feedback design, with RIAA equalisation incorporated into the negative-feedback loop. DC servo circuitry keeps the musical signal directly coupled from the moving-coil input through to the final output.
Sugden treats the power supply as an integral part of the amplifier, so the PA-4 uses a current-shunt power supply with a specially designed voltage regulator. This is intended to maintain low impedance at higher frequencies.
The Sugden PA-4 is hand-assembled using carefully selected, high-quality components on gold-plated circuit boards designed for long-term stability. Its design is intended to provide transparency, natural tonality and musical realism while preserving the character of the recording.
