Masterclass IA-4 Integrated Amplifier

The Sugden Masterclass IA-4 is a wonderfully distinctive amplifier and a superb example of what pure Class A amplification can achieve when it is executed properly.

Rated at 33 watts per channel, the IA-4 may not appear especially powerful on paper, but that figure tells only part of the story. In practice, it delivers music with tremendous solidity, control and ease, together with the smooth, natural tonal character that has made Sugden amplifiers so highly regarded.

Where the IA-4 really excels is in the way it combines warmth and richness with genuine transparency. Voices and acoustic instruments have excellent texture and body, while the presentation remains open, spacious and beautifully composed. There is none of the hardness or glare that can sometimes creep into more forward-sounding solid-state designs.

As Sugden’s flagship integrated amplifier, the Masterclass IA-4 sits above the A21 models and offers greater scale, authority and dynamic capability. It is particularly impressive with high-quality loudspeakers, where its ability to create a deep, stable soundstage and maintain composure at higher listening levels becomes very apparent.

The IA-4 also includes a high-quality moving-magnet phono stage, making it an excellent choice for listeners who want to build a serious vinyl-based system without adding a separate phono preamplifier.

Build quality is typically Sugden: substantial, purposeful and designed for long-term ownership rather than fashion. At around 20kg, it feels every bit the high-end amplifier and is built in the UK using a deliberately straightforward, purist approach.

For listeners who value natural tone, musical flow and long-term listening enjoyment over exaggerated detail or hi-fi fireworks, the Masterclass IA-4 remains one of the most convincing integrated amplifiers in its class.
