M2-9R Tonearm

The SME M2-9R is a precision tonearm for SME turntables and forms part of the M2 Series Classic Range, which is now available for individual retail sales. The range complements the magnesium tonearms fitted to SME turntables and follows established SME design principles.

The M2-9 is the standard version, with a pivot-stylus dimension of 233.2mm (9.18˝) and a typical effective mass of 9.5 grams. The M2-10 has the same design with a 239.3mm (9.42˝) pivot-stylus dimension, a layout suited to some turntables, and a typical effective mass of 9.6 grams. The M2-12 measures 308.8mm (12.16˝) from pivot to stylus and reduces distortion caused by lateral tracking error by at least 25% compared with a nine inch tonearm. Its typical effective mass is 12.0 grams, and it requires a turntable designed for 12-inch tonearms.

These SME M2 tonearms suit a broad range of cartridges, including medium and low compliance designs. The internally damped arm tube is made from highly polished stainless steel and is designed for uncoloured reproduction. A single-element balance system accommodates cartridges weighing 5 to 12 grams. Once balanced, tracking force is applied by moving the counterweight forwards, keeping system inertia low. The weight travels on a precision screw thread with a backlash eliminator for exact vertical tracking force adjustment.

The M2 shell is pressure die-cast in magnesium for lightness and rigidity. Its collet design provides one-piece rigidity while allowing azimuth correction before final tightening.
