M2-9 Tonearm

The SME M2-9 is a precision tonearm for turntables, with a pivot-to-stylus dimension of 233.2mm (9.18˝) and a typical effective mass of 9.5 grams. It is the standard arm in the M2 Series and is intended for use with a broad range of cartridges, including medium- and low-compliance designs.

The M2 Series is now assigned to SME’s Classic Range for individual retail sales, alongside the magnesium tonearms fitted to SME turntables and the newer VA tonearm. Its design follows established SME principles, with an internally damped, highly polished stainless steel arm providing uncoloured reproduction.

A single-element balance system accommodates cartridges weighing 5 to 12 grams. Once balanced, tracking force is applied by moving the counterweight forwards, reducing system inertia. The weight runs on a precision screw thread with a backlash eliminator for accurate vertical tracking force adjustment.

The M2 shell is pressure die-cast in magnesium for lightness and rigidity. Its collet design provides one-piece rigidity and allows azimuth correction before final tightening.

The M2-10 is identical to the M2-9 apart from its 239.3mm (9.42˝) pivot-to-stylus dimension, which suits the layout of some turntables. Its typical effective mass is 9.6 grams.

The M2-12 has a 308.8mm (12.16˝) pivot-to-stylus dimension. Lateral tracking error distortion is at least 25% lower than with a 9-inch arm, while its typical effective mass is 12.0 grams. It requires a turntable designed for 12-inch tonearms.
