The Sonus faber Lumina II Amator is a 2-way bookshelf loudspeaker from the Lumina collection. Sonus faber introduced the collection in September 2020, during a difficult and unprecedented year, bringing a new direction to its established product design while retaining the brand’s history, spirit and values. The first models were the 2-way Lumina I bookshelf loudspeaker, the 3-way Lumina III floorstanding loudspeaker and the 2-way Lumina CI centre channel.

The Lumina II and the 3-way Lumina V were added in 2021, extending the collection with higher power for larger environments and a focus on price point. Lumina II Amator and Lumina V Amator continue that development with changes to both style and performance. The name Amator has been used for Sonus faber special models and is associated with distinctive designs and an engaging presentation.

Its square, uncomplicated enclosure is made in Italy and places emphasis on the materials used. The Lumina II Amator has a new wood front panel with a glossy finish and a 45° angled wood veneer. It is available in 3 finishes:

  • Glossy Red
  • Glossy Wenge
  • Glossy Walnut

The Lumina electro-acoustic design is intended for modern lifestyles and a range of listening environments. The speakers can be used in multichannel systems and multimedia installations, with room coverage suited to listening from different positions. The design also allows placement close to a rear wall or on a bookshelf.

The drive-unit complement includes the D.A.D. (Damped Apex Dome) tweeter used in the Sonetto series, with a 29mm Kurtmueller hand-coated soft silk diaphragm. A 4” midwoofer developed for the Lumina collection uses a custom-made basket and a cellulose pulp diaphragm blended with other natural fibres.

The wider Lumina range also includes 5” midrange drivers based on Sonetto designs, using Sonus faber’s proprietary natural fibre and paper blend air-dried diaphragm, together with 5” woofers developed specifically for the collection. These woofers use a paper pulp cone designed to maintain sonic coherence with the other drivers.

Updated crossover technology makes the Lumina speakers adaptable to different locations. In the Lumina II Amator, the crossover network frequency is now up to 2600 Hz, an increase of 800 Hz compared with the Lumina II. Improvements to the crossover components increase the speaker’s performance and sensitivity.

The crossover design for the Lumina II Amator and Lumina V Amator draws on development work from the Homage collection, including solutions derived from the Amati 5 and Guarneri G5. These include IFF circuitry and a phase-coherent approach intended to reproduce a 3-dimensional virtual soundstage. The revised filters provide greater resolution and more rigorous, coherent reproduction.
