K-03XD

The Esoteric K-03XD is an integrated Super Audio CD player with the VRDS-ATLAS transport mechanism and Master Sound Discrete DAC, 2 technologies originally developed for the Grandioso K-1X. Both are incorporated into this XD edition to support playback from digital musical sources. The K-01 and K-03 Super Audio CD players established Esoteric’s integrated digital player range, which has received numerous awards and become widely regarded as a reference for digital playback.

Master Sound Discrete DAC is designed entirely in-house by Esoteric. Together with VRDS-ATLAS, it provides the dynamic range and resolution required to reproduce large-scale symphonic crescendos, a broad range of tones and subtle musical detail. The design is intended to accommodate different musical genres, including arias and rock music.

VRDS, or Vibration-Free Rigid Disc-Clamping System, has been a central Esoteric CD and Super Audio CD transport technology since the brand was founded. The disc is firmly clamped to a turntable of the same diameter, reducing vibration from the rotating disc and the effects of external mechanical vibration. The turntable also corrects latent disc warpage, improving the relative optical-axis accuracy between the optical pickup and disc pit surface while reducing servo current. These measures reduce disc read errors.

Esoteric has developed the VRDS mechanism continuously for more than 30 years. The VRDS-ATLAS platform was introduced as a reference mechanism for the Grandioso P1X and K1X, and the K-03XD uses a version customised for the model.

The K-03XD’s ATLAS 03 system uses a simpler 18mm-thick bridge that requires considerably less machining. Its rigid, heavy construction helps damp vibration that could affect sound quality. The transport uses a duralumin turntable and a solid steel bridge larger than the bridge used for VRDS-NEO. A one-point spindle bearing design reduces friction and rotational noise through a point-contact thrust bearing, using the same steel ball as the high-end models.
