The Esoteric Grandioso D1X SE digital-to-analogue converter uses the company’s Master Sound Discrete DAC, an original discrete circuit design developed as Esoteric’s reference digital conversion platform. It uses 64-bit/512Fs processing, compared with the 36-bit resolution of earlier Esoteric DACs, and supports native playback of 22.5MHz DSD and 768kHz PCM audio. All processing is handled by an Esoteric FPGA algorithm, while the discrete circuitry avoids generic DAC ICs.

Master Sound Discrete DAC

The 64-bit/512Fs architecture reduces digital rounding error to a minimum and is designed to preserve fine texture in the analogue output. It supports a wide range of formats, including high-resolution DSD master files, with native playback of 22.5MHz DSD and 768kHz PCM.

Discrete DAC Circuitry

The Grandioso D1X SE was developed to reproduce the vibrancy, energy and full body of a musical performance through its analogue signal. Esoteric considered the use of higher-grade parts than integrated chips, together with more substantial materials, in developing a DAC intended to deliver an analogue signal with instantaneous energy and fine musical detail.

There are 4 DAC circuits per channel, with 8 circuit elements arranged in a semi-circle to maintain equidistant signal transmission within each DAC. A total of 32 circuit elements are arranged in 2 circles. Resistors, logic ICs and power supplies are separated for all 32 circuits, and each circuit has its own independent power supply. Ultra-high-precision resistors of the type used in measuring instruments are used for accurate, high-speed digital arithmetic processing.

Upgraded with IDM-01 and Other Quality Parts

For the SE model, Esoteric refreshed the discrete components in the analogue circuitry on the DAC board. The amplifier element is the original Integrated Discrete-Amplifier Module IDM-01. Its materials, circuit patterns and layout were developed in the manner of a discrete amplifier, while its integrated construction allows a very short signal path. The IDM-01 is used alongside selected analogue components, including analogue filter resistors and capacitors, to support audible dynamics, a more organic texture and a vivid live presentation.

Esoteric-HCLD Output Buffer

The Esoteric-HCLD output buffer amplifier is mounted on a separate board from the D/A converter. Its circuitry has been upgraded to double the scale of the original Grandioso D1, with main components offering a slew rate of 2,000V/μs. RCA output uses a 4-circuit parallel configuration, while balanced XLR output uses 2 hot circuits and 2 cold circuits.

This arrangement supports high-current-mode transmission and fast operation in the analogue output stage, helping the D1X SE reproduce musical dynamics and clarity. HCLD means High Current Line Driver.

Monoblock DAC

Esoteric introduced the D-01 in 2004 as the world’s first monoblock D/A converter. The Grandioso D1X SE continues this design approach as a dual-mono converter, with separate left and right channels for channel separation and stereo reproduction. It combines this monoblock architecture with newer technologies developed for the Grandioso range.

Advanced Quality Control

Component tolerances in a discrete DAC directly affect arithmetic precision, so the manufacture of its electronic circuit boards requires precise quality control. Esoteric’s in-house factory uses board-mounting methods including soldering in an oxygen-free furnace. The furnace is located in a clean room with the same level of cleanliness as a hospital operating room.

Production techniques developed for electronic circuit boards used in audio, medical, aerospace and defence applications support the manufacturing quality of the Master Sound Discrete DAC.
