Solid Perfect-Surface Silver (PSS) and Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) Conductors

Solid conductors prevent electrical strand-to-strand interaction, which is a significant source of distortion. Surface quality is important because a conductor acts as a guide for the electrical fields within it and the magnetic fields extending beyond it. The smooth, pure surfaces of AudioQuest’s Perfect-Surface metals reduce harshness and improve clarity compared with lesser materials. The selected PSS and PSC+ conductor sizes give FireBird performance close to an all-PSS Silver design, at a lower cost.

Carbon-Based Linearized Noise-Dissipation System

Radio-frequency noise is widespread and difficult to filter or reject. Noise from satellites, cellular towers and Bluetooth operates across extremely narrow frequency ranges, making a conventional shield, series filter or shunt filter inadequate. Induced radio-frequency noise can mask the low-level signal carrying the harmonics and spatial cues associated with high-resolution audio. AudioQuest’s Linearized Noise-Dissipation System combines multiple shields with a carbon-based linearized resistive network that converts most of this noise into heat. The system is linearized, meaning that it operates across a very wide bandwidth rather than only at selected frequencies. The remaining unwanted energy is directed away from sensitive amplifier circuits through directionally controlled signal and shield conductors.

ZERO-Tech

The complete elimination of characteristic-impedance mismatches between a cable and its source and load requires the cable to have no fixed characteristic-impedance value. ZERO-Tech achieves this by removing interaction between the insulation, or dielectric, and the cable conductors. This enables uncompressed current transfer, leaving transient current unrestricted and keeping RF Noise-Dissipation linearised consistently from octave to octave.

Insulation also acts as a dielectric and a shunt filter. Biasing the dielectric correctly linearises the filter and improves the cable’s ability to dissipate induced noise across a wide bandwidth. The DBS pack’s Level-X Noise-Trap draws RF noise out of the cable, further reducing unwanted behaviour in the connected audio circuits.

Terminations

FireBird cables are cold-welded to AudioQuest’s pure Red Copper spades or bananas. The bare copper is suspended in a vat of pure silver rather than tumbled in a lower-grade solution. AudioQuest speaker breakouts and plug casings are non-metallic, to avoid inducing RF noise into the conductors.

Bi-Wiring

Where possible, running separate cables to the treble and bass sections of a speaker reduces distortion. Bi-wiring keeps the large magnetic fields associated with bass energy away from the treble cable, allowing upper frequencies to follow a less magnetically disturbed path.

AudioQuest BASS and GND-Tech, its patented Ground-Noise-Dissipation system, draw RF energy away from the amplifier output. When correctly implemented, bi-wiring can improve performance for the same or less money. GND-Tech makes the benefit of bi-wiring more pronounced.

FireBird BASS cable is intended for the bass input of a bi-wireable speaker, used with a FireBird ZERO on the treble input. A Bi-Wire COMBO, with BASS and ZERO cables joined at the amplifier, is generally the most convenient arrangement. For tri-wiring, use BASS cables on the midrange and bass inputs.

Caution: Do not bi-wire with 2 ZERO cables. 2 or more ZERO cables in parallel can create a very high-frequency resonant peak, or ringing, resulting in poor sound. With a bi-wired speaker, use ZERO only with a BASS cable. Alternatively, use a single ZERO cable with jumpers.
