The Weiss DAC 501 is a high-end digital-to-analogue converter, network streamer, preamplifier and headphone amplifier in a compact chassis. Developed by Weiss Engineering, with its background in professional studio technology, it combines digital conversion with extensive signal processing for digital music sources.
Digital playback is supported up to 384kHz PCM and DSD64/128. Inputs include USB, Ethernet, AES/EBU, coaxial and optical digital connections. Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analogue outputs allow the Weiss DAC 501 to connect directly to a power amplifier or integrated amplifier, while the dedicated headphone output supports use as the centre of a personal listening system.
The digital signal processing is derived from Weiss Engineering’s professional audio technology. Functions include room equalisation, tone adjustment, loudness control, headphone equalisation and crossfeed, providing control over system performance without additional hardware.
With UPnP/DLNA and Roon support, the DAC501 can also operate as a network streamer. It is operated using the front-panel colour touchscreen and rotary control, the supplied remote handset or a web-based interface, which provides access to advanced settings and DSP functions.
Weiss uses discrete analogue output circuitry and carefully regulated power supplies, with attention given to reducing noise and preserving the integrity of the converted signal. The design is intended to provide accuracy, resolution and neutrality, with minimal added colouration to the character and detail contained in the recording.
The DAC501 brings streaming, digital-to-analogue conversion, preamplification, headphone amplification and digital signal processing together in one component for a two-channel system.
