The McIntosh C49 is a preamplifier with a replaceable DA1 Digital Audio Module, allowing the digital section to be changed as new digital audio technologies and formats are developed. This provides a way to keep the C49 current with future digital music formats.
There are 13 inputs in total, and each can be assigned a user-friendly name to simplify system setup and control. Analogue connections comprise 2 balanced inputs, 3 unbalanced inputs and 2 phono inputs, with 1 Moving Coil and 1 Moving Magnet input for turntables. The DA1 module provides 6 digital inputs, including 2 coaxial, 2 optical, 1 USB and 1 proprietary MCT input for use with McIntosh MCT series SACD/CD transports.
The DA1 uses an 8-channel, 32-bit Digital-to-Analogue Converter in Quad Balanced mode, supporting playback up to DSD256 and DXD 384kHz for high resolution audio.
For connection to a power amplifier and the rest of a home audio system, the McIntosh C49 has 2 balanced variable outputs, 2 unbalanced variable outputs and 1 unbalanced fixed output. The outputs support bi-amping without inadvertently turning off either the high or low frequencies. Bass and treble tone controls allow audio sources to be fine tuned.
Home Theatre Pass Through allows the C49 to be integrated into a home theatre system. Power Control ports switch connected McIntosh components on and off, while Data Ports send remote control commands to connected source components. A McIntosh High Drive headphone amplifier with Headphone Crossfeed Director, HXD®, is also included.
The design includes a black glass front panel, control knobs, an illuminated logo and aluminium end caps. The C49 can be used with McIntosh amplifiers, turntables, CD players, tuners, speakers, power controllers and room correction devices to form a complete home audio system.
