The McIntosh C22 Mk V is a vacuum tube preamplifier and the latest McIntosh model to carry the C22 name. It directly replaces the C70 Limited Edition 70th Anniversary Vacuum Tube Preamplifier, produced in a limited run to commemorate McIntosh’s 70th Anniversary in 2019. The C22 Mk V retains the C70’s performance alongside the C22 model designation and the signature glass and aluminium front panel design.

Input connections comprise 2 balanced inputs, 3 unbalanced inputs, 1 Moving Coil phono input and 1 Moving Magnet phono input, providing 7 inputs in total. There are 2 pairs each of balanced and unbalanced outputs, allowing the preamplifier to send signals to 2 separate power amplifiers. 4 Power Control ports can automatically switch connected McIntosh components, including amplifiers, CD players and turntables, on and off. Data ports provide control of basic functions on connected McIntosh source components through the included remote control.

One 12AT7 and 5 12AX7A vacuum tubes are visible through the glass panel on top of the preamplifier. Knobs and rocker switches operate the controls, while LED indicators show input selection and volume level. The front panel includes bypassable bass and treble tone controls, adjustable in 2dB increments with rotary knobs. Separate rotary knobs adjust phono input impedance and capacitance. The volume control sets the listening level and adjusts the relative balance between the left and right audio channels.

A ¼” headphone jack is powered by McIntosh’s High Drive headphone amplifier and incorporates Headphone Crossfeed Director, HXD®, technology. HXD restores the directional component of the sound stage normally heard from loudspeakers, improving sound localisation for headphone listening.

The McIntosh C22 Mk V is built on a polished stainless steel chassis with aluminium end caps, an illuminated McIntosh logo, control knobs and a retro black glass and aluminium front panel. Its design is intended to complement McIntosh home audio systems from the 1950s through to the present day.
