The EAR Yoshino 88PB is a valve phono preamplifier designed for systems with one or two turntables or tonearms. It follows the EAR 834P, one of the first standalone phono stages, and was developed as a more advanced model during the continuing popularity of vinyl. The design draws on Tim de Paravicini’s experience with audio electronics and incorporates several innovations from the Paravicini 312 Control Centre, a fully featured solid-state preamplifier and the solid-state 324 phono stage.

There are 2 inputs, both suitable for moving magnet cartridges. One input can also be switched for moving coil cartridges, using Tim de Paravicini’s input transformers. The moving coil input impedance is adjustable internally.

A volume control allows the 88PB to connect directly to a power amplifier in a single-source system. Its highly linear buffer stage follows the volume control and avoids a cable-dependent high-frequency response. An output transformer provides balanced or single-ended output at low impedance, allowing the preamplifier to drive long cables.

The EAR Yoshino 88PB uses a high-stability circuit to produce the RIAA equalisation curve required for records. Its valve circuit design and output transformer arrangement support the all-round sound quality associated with EAR amplifiers.
