The EAR Yoshino 861 is a 32-watt-per-channel valve amplifier using Tim de Paravicini’s Enhanced Triode Mode (ETM) with EL519 pentode tubes. Developed through research, development and day-to-day manufacture with the EL519 series, ETM creates a true triode from a robust pentode rather than using the conventional triode-connected pentode arrangement.
In a conventional configuration, the second grid is connected to the anode, producing a compromise between pentode efficiency and triode linearity. With ETM, Grid One is tied to the cathode and becomes an invisible, transparent element that forms part of the cathode. The signal is applied to Grid Two, while Grid Three has no effect and may either be connected to earth or left floating. The result behaves as a true triode and is more linear than the majority of directly heated triodes. The EL519 also provides a tougher, more robust tube with a substantially longer operational life.
The first amplifier to use ETM was the EAR Yoshino 859, and the 861 can be viewed as its push-pull counterpart, although each output transformer weighs 5 kilograms and operates without feedback applied around it. The circuit is balanced push-pull from input to output, with balanced professional-style inputs alongside conventional unbalanced RCA phono jack sockets. Like the 859, it uses direct coupling. Tube selection is not critical, as correct operation does not depend on matched tubes or user-adjustable bias.
Output power is 32 watts per channel from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Half-power bandwidth extends beyond 16 Hz to 60,000 Hz, with low total distortion and no overall feedback. The tube complement comprises 2 x ECC83, 6 x PCC88 and 4 x EL519. The amplifier weighs 27 kilograms.
The EAR Yoshino 861 has the same family character as the EAR 859, with greater authority and attack. Its lower bass has substantial grip and feel beyond what the 32-watt rating might suggest, while the treble is smoother, cleaner and sweeter, largely because there is no overall feedback. It offers power and control for demanding recordings from both analogue and digital sources, with an effortless presentation.
