The SME 30-2A MKII is a precision turntable designed to complement the SME Series V tonearm. Its construction and vibration control are intended to minimise mechanical coloration and preserve the character of the original recording, without critical setup procedures.
The 19mm aluminium alloy sub-chassis weighs approximately 17kg, while the four-pillar base adds a further 16kg. This combination of mass and rigidity reduces flexing and vibration, with extensional damping providing additional resonance control.
Suspension is provided by 48 purpose-moulded O-rings, forming 96 rubber suspension strands without conventional metal springs and their associated sonic signature. Four fluid dampers control sub-chassis movement, preventing overshoot while maintaining isolation from acoustic feedback. Transport locks secure the suspension during movement.
The 330mm platter weighs 7kg and is carried by a 170.5mm-long, 19mm-diameter spindle. This runs in a sealed bearing housing containing individually fitted sintered-bronze bearings. A precision-machined scroll surface and substantial reflex clamp maintain secure contact with the record. Interchangeable arm mounting plinths are accurately located by dowels.
Drive comes from a 2.5kg electronically commutated motor, isolated on urethane mounts and virtually free from cogging and vibration. A precision stainless-steel pulley, concentric to within ±2.5 microns, drives the 2.3kg damped sub-platter through a ground rubber belt.
Electronic speed control uses a high-performance microcomputer with Hall-position sensing for accurate, stable operation at 33.3, 45 and 78 rpm. User-adjustable speed control is incorporated into the four-layer surface-mount PCB. The SME 30-2A MKII is engineered around mass, rigidity, precision and vibration control, with neutrality, detail, dynamics and pitch stability as its design aims.
