20-3 MKII

The SME Model 20/3 MKII is a suspended high-mass turntable engineered to control unwanted vibration through rigidity, mass and carefully managed damping.

Its approximately 28.6kg construction includes a 16mm-thick sub-chassis weighing 11kg. Suspension is provided by 40 purpose-moulded O-rings, creating 80 rubber suspension strands. A central fluid damper controls sub-chassis movement and helps prevent acoustic feedback. The suspension can be adjusted and secured for transport.

Acoustic energy is managed through carefully designed interfaces, extensional damping and resistive coupling, reducing unwanted resonance and coloration within the structure. The 6.5kg platter uses SME Isodamp construction and has a precision-machined scroll surface. Its 19mm hardened, ground and super-finished steel spindle runs in a sealed oil-bath bearing, while the screw-down reflex clamp helps minimise record resonance.

Drive comes from a three-phase, brushless motor with 8-pole neodymium magnets and Hall sensors. A microprocessor-controlled closed-loop system regulates speed, with fine adjustment available in 0.01% increments. The SME Model 20/3 MKII supports 33⅓, 45 and 78rpm operation.
