The SME 12A MKII is a high-mass turntable with a small footprint, designed for listeners who want to choose their own phono stage and cartridge. The Model 12A uses precision-engineered components manufactured in-house to strict tolerances, with an SME Model 309 tonearm fitted as standard and upgrade options for Series IV or V tonearms. It is available in SME Black, Dark Grey and Dark Blue, each with contrasting detailing.

The electronic control unit uses a high-performance microprocessor optimised for motor control. Closed-loop speed control operates through a proportional plus integral (PI) algorithm. The available speeds are 33.3, 45 and 78 rpm, with fine pitch adjustment in increments or decrements of +/-0.01% of the selected speed.
The electronic control circuitry and power supply are contained in an external, one-piece CNC-machined case, providing isolation and support for the electronics. Speed selection controls and LED indicators are positioned on the front fascia panel.
The SME Model 309 is a one-piece magnesium tonearm using advanced metal techniques to provide a rigid structure. Its detachable magnesium headshell has an advanced coupling design for rapid cartridge interchange while retaining the arm's rigidity. Constrained layers within the tonearm damp minute residual vibrations, and the internal wiring is supplied by specialist high-end audio cable manufacturer Crystal Cable.
The SME 12A MKII uses Crystal Cable premium-grade signal cable inside the tonearm, connected to the phono stage and cartridge. The conductors are miniature pure mono-crystal silver, using the metal in its pure form for the signal path.
