McIntosh MA2375 vs Marantz MODEL 10: Two Very Different Routes to High-End Amplification
At first glance, the McIntosh MA2375 and Marantz MODEL 10 appear to occupy similar territory. Both are luxurious, statement integrated amplifiers from two of hi-fi’s most established names, and both are designed to sit at the heart of a serious two-channel system.
Look beneath the surface, however, and they could hardly be more different.
The McIntosh is an unapologetically traditional all-valve amplifier, combining valve preamplification and power amplification with McIntosh’s famous output transformers. The Marantz takes almost the opposite approach, using an extremely powerful, modern Class D dual-mono architecture.
The result is a fascinating choice between two different interpretations of what a reference integrated amplifier should be.
McIntosh MA2375: the emotional approach
The MA2375 marks McIntosh’s return to an all-valve integrated amplifier after more than a decade.
At its heart are four KT88 output valves, supported by four 12AT7 driver valves, while the preamplifier section uses two 12AX7A and two additional 12AT7 valves. Power is rated at 75 watts per channel, delivered through McIntosh’s Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers.
On paper, 75 watts may seem modest alongside the Marantz, but valve amplifier specifications rarely tell the whole story. McIntosh’s transformer-coupled architecture allows the MA2375 to deliver its rated power into 4, 8 or 16-ohm loudspeaker loads, making those 75 watts considerably more useful than the figure alone might suggest.
More importantly, the appeal of the MA2375 is not really about outright power.
This is an amplifier aimed at listeners who value texture, tonal colour, dimensionality and the sense of musicians occupying a believable acoustic space. It is the kind of presentation that encourages you to stop analysing the system and start listening to the performance.
There is also something inherently involving about owning a valve McIntosh. The exposed glowing valves, polished stainless-steel chassis and trademark blue power meters make the MA2375 as much a piece of audio theatre as a piece of electronics.
Marantz MODEL 10: control and authority
If the McIntosh represents tradition, the MODEL 10 demonstrates just how far modern amplifier technology has progressed.
Marantz employs a fully balanced, symmetrical dual-mono Class D architecture, supported by a newly developed switched-mode power supply.
The numbers are formidable.
The MODEL 10 produces 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 500 watts per channel into 4 ohms, with both channels driven. Marantz also quotes an impressive damping factor of 500.
That enormous reserve of current gives the MODEL 10 an obvious advantage with large, demanding loudspeakers.
Where the McIntosh tends towards flow and texture, the Marantz is about grip, speed and control. Bass has the potential to be exceptionally tight and powerful, dynamic changes arrive with seemingly effortless authority, and difficult speaker loads are much less likely to trouble it.
It is an amplifier built to take command.
75 watts versus 250 watts isn’t the whole story
It would be easy to look at the specifications and conclude that the Marantz simply has more than three times the power.
Technically it does.
Musically, however, the comparison is more nuanced.
The MA2375’s Unity Coupled output transformers isolate the loudspeaker load from the valve output stage and provide dedicated connections for different speaker impedances. McIntosh rates the amplifier at 75 watts into 4, 8 or 16 ohms.
With reasonably efficient loudspeakers in a normal-sized listening room, that can be entirely sufficient.
The MODEL 10 nevertheless has an undeniable advantage when driving inefficient speakers, large floorstanders or systems expected to reproduce music at very high levels. Its ability to double from 250 watts into 8 ohms to 500 watts into 4 ohms is particularly significant.
This is one area where speaker choice should strongly influence the decision.
Both are thoroughly analogue
Interestingly, neither amplifier attempts to become an all-in-one digital hub.
The MA2375 is deliberately all analogue, offering six analogue inputs in total, including two balanced connections and a sophisticated configurable MM/MC phono stage. McIntosh also provides a dedicated subwoofer output, preamplifier output and five-band analogue equaliser.
The MODEL 10 similarly concentrates on analogue amplification rather than streaming or digital conversion. It provides two balanced XLR inputs, multiple RCA inputs, MM/MC phono, balanced and unbalanced power-amplifier inputs and pre-outs.
For systems built around a high-quality separate streamer or DAC, we regard that as a strength rather than an omission.
Vinyl listeners are well served
Both manufacturers have taken vinyl replay seriously.
McIntosh provides a configurable MM/MC phono input with adjustable gain, capacitance, resistance loading and RIAA settings.
Marantz equips the MODEL 10 with its Musical Premium Phono EQ stage, supporting both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, with three selectable MC impedance settings.
Either amplifier can therefore form the centrepiece of a genuinely high-end analogue system without immediately requiring an external phono stage.
Living with them
The ownership experience is another area where these amplifiers diverge.
The MODEL 10 is extraordinarily powerful while remaining relatively compact by high-end amplifier standards. At 33.7kg it is certainly substantial, but its Class D architecture avoids the large transformers and banks of output devices associated with many traditional high-powered designs.
The MA2375 weighs an even more substantial 42.2kg, despite producing considerably less power. That tells you something about the transformers, chassis and power supply involved in constructing a traditional McIntosh valve amplifier.
Valves also introduce an ownership consideration absent from the Marantz: they are consumable components and will eventually require replacement.
For some listeners this is an inconvenience. For others it is simply part of the pleasure of owning a genuine valve amplifier.
Which should you choose?
This is not a comparison with a straightforward winner.
Choose the McIntosh MA2375 if…
You want an amplifier that makes listening an event.
The MA2375 has enormous character, both visually and conceptually. Its all-valve architecture is aimed at listeners seeking musical texture, presence and intimacy rather than enormous power figures.
Partner it with loudspeakers of sensible sensitivity and it has the ingredients for an exceptionally involving system.
It is also arguably the more romantic of the two amplifiers. Switching it on, watching the valves illuminate and seeing those unmistakable McIntosh meters come to life is part of the experience.
Choose the Marantz MODEL 10 if…
You want effortless power, precision and control.
With 250 watts into 8 ohms and a remarkable 500 watts into 4 ohms, the MODEL 10 opens the door to virtually any loudspeaker you might realistically consider partnering with an integrated amplifier.
For large rooms, inefficient loudspeakers, complex impedance loads or listeners who enjoy substantial listening levels, the Marantz’s reserves make a compelling argument.
Its presentation is also likely to appeal to listeners looking for speed, transparency and tight low-frequency control.
Two philosophies. One fascinating comparison.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about these amplifiers is that neither is trying to imitate the other.

Choosing between them ultimately comes down to your loudspeakers, your room and, most importantly, what you want your system to make you feel.
And that is precisely why specifications alone can never make the decision.
